Free space optics (also known as "wireless fiber") enables
enterprises to connect buildings at distances of several hundred
meters (roughly a few thousand feet) over a point-to-point wireless
laser link. Free space optics operates at speeds of 100 Mbps or
higher and is traditionally used to connect LANs at the different
sites. RAD's IPmux TDM over IP (TDMoIP) gateway delivers traditional
TDM-based voice and signaling protocols to connect PBX circuits
across the Ethernet-based laser transport. The TDMoIP solution enables
simple transmission of voice traffic over the laser link without
the need for costly upgrades to the existing infrastructure. Moreover,
the transparent transport method provided by RAD's TDMoIP technology
easily extends traditional voice switches to the customer PBXs without
the expense and complexity of upgrading to VoIP or leasing costly
E1/T1 lines.
In the scenario shown here, the Cisco router can be used to transmit
LAN traffic while TDMoIP delivers legacy services.
Other TDMoIP products, such as RAD's Megaplex, connect FXO and
FXS interfaces as well as PBX traffic over Ethernet/IP-based free
space optics.
