Japan Telecom Chooses RAD's ACE-101 NTU for Its MegaLaser Express ATM Leased Line Service

Japan Telecom, one of Japan's largest carriers, has recently integrated RAD's ACE-101TM into its ATM leased line service. The service, referred to as MegaLaser Express, operates both local and wide area networks, guaranteeing super-high speed transmission of large volume data, video and voice.

"Like many carriers, Japan Telecom has opted for ATM technology over a more conventional SDH network for a number of reasons, including cost-efficiency and service performance. ATM offers a combination of greater bandwidth and good quality transmission of mixed media traffic," says Masakatsu Nunokawa, Manager of Japan Telecom's ATM/FR Engineering Group.

CJK, RAD's distributor in Japan, proposed the ACE-101 ATM network termination unit (NTU) to Japan Telecom to ensure smooth and managed provisioning of mixed high speed traffic over its integrated network.

"The ACE-101 is ideal for the creation of controlled demarcation of Japan Telecom's public native ATM services," says Ariel Caner, RAD's Senior ATM and Broadband Access Product Line Manager. "Its carrier-class capabilities and features include numerous configuration options and removable modules."

ACE-101 Maintains ATM Circuits End-to-End
Remote management features and in-band configuration options of the ACE-101 were particularly attractive to Japan Telecom.

"The ACE-101 enables our network to guarantee high performance, and that is what we promise our customers," says Mr. Nunokawa. "With the ACE-101, we are able to monitor our ATM circuits end-to-end."

ACE-101 shaping capabilities enable Japan Telecom's ATM circuits to pass through NTT's (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation) MegaLink ATM cloud. The product's traffic shaping feature fully complies with the rigid traffic requirements of NTT's ATM service.

Japan Telecom also relies on the ACE-101 for emergency backup. "The ACE-101's redundancy capabilities ensure operability in case of line failure," adds Nunokawa, "and that is extremely important in a leased line environment."

As a result of the success of the ACE-101 installation in the MegaLaser service, Japan Telecom has also installed the ACE-101 in their domestic and international cell relay service, Laser Express CRi.

The ACE-101 is part of RAD's ACE family of intelligent NTUs. ACE products can be found in ATM networks around the world, including British Telecom, France Telecom, Katch-Net (Japan), MATAV (Hungary) and eircom (Ireland).
